A Million Things I Hate

I Hate Selling on Gumtree

Selling on Gumtree is a miserable experience.

I don't have Facebook so Gumtree is my only real option for selling bulky items or things that are awkward to post.

Right now I'm selling furniture for less than half the cost of when it was new. It is immaculate and there is hardly any interest. Isn't there a 'cost of living crisis'? There is no one in this town that has just moved out and needs some furniture for a cheap price to do them for now?

It's easier and less effort to smash it all up and chuck it in the skip.

Even when there has been interest, it is someone asking if the item is still available and then never sending any further messages. Why ask if you aren't going to respond further? Why waste the time of both of us?

In the past I've had it where I've provided my address to a buyer and they never bother to turn up! You're then in limbo wondering if they will suddenly appear at the door demanding the item, angry that you've sold it or smashed it. To avoid this I now only give my address out an hour or so before they plan to come past and that has worked so far.

If you list something for free though it's a whole different story. Even if it is something crap, people go apeshit wild for a freebie. Six messages in an hour, multiple from the same person chasing you for something worth a couple of quid! I've given freebies away just so save things from going in the bin but it's annoying as I know they wouldn't have enquired should the thing have cost any money at all.

The worst experience was someone offering me £8 for a £10 item. Go away - stop being a cheapskate, it is a two pound difference, if you really want it you'll pay the full £10. I didn't respond, but they chased me up on it, 'I can see you have read my message'. I blocked them and they registered new accounts to ask. Am I really going to give my address out to a madman for ten quid?

Gumtree sucks. Don't mess me around, just buy my shit.
